I can understand how it'd be difficult to cast friends at that point thematically, as casting a spell mid conversation is subject to suspicion. Not to mention that the Friends spell in BG3 is insurmountably more powerful than the tabletop version, given the tabletop version has the clause that they become hostile to you when it wears off. Forcing the players to use it tactically is a fine counterbalance to having the NPC remain buddy buddy with you when it's over.
Perhaps sorcerers will have the 'Distant Spell' metamagic when they come out, which will let you double the range of your ranged spells. This will make friends exceptionally broken for a sorcerer diplomat. Until then you'll likely have to figure out how to stick it on them before getting their attention, perhaps through stealth or invisibility.
Even outside of this specific issue, you would have to know who to cast it on beforehand going into a conversation, so no, I dont care if they make them pissed off after it wears off I would rather be able to cast it mid conversation when its clear who Im talking to and that they arent cooperative.
Even balance aside, its in the game, its pointless to only have access to it half the time.
Casting spells during dialogues should be possible, this ain't an anime and you should be able to act in the middle of it.
