Prices from traders are wrong.
Every price that the trader has is wrong by 2-5x. this shield 150gp it says, go to buy it, its 500gp now. this axe for 390, now its 1490 since youre trying to buy it. Traders act like hoarders that don't want to part with anything so they just upcharge the price. I'm assuming its a glitch but if not then what was the thinking behind putting a price tag on something only to have it cost something else entirely.

Average cost vs Markup. The price you see is its "worth" and its modified by if you are buying or selling it. Now the real big brain play is if you could lower the modifier by having a high charisima score/skills or if the merchant in question happens to be under the effects of a charm spell.

Yeah, it's not a glitch, it's what was said above, but I agree it should show the actual price you're going to pay in the tooltip, not it's "value" or whatever. It's really silly having to put it into the buy area just to find out how much it costs.

The thing is, the prices change from one play through to the next. Sometimes the helmet is 180, sometimes 390, sometimes 690 so that charisma think might be in play

I'm assuming the price difference was something to do with a combination of faction, charisma, and/or skills. I have a bigger problem with the base price for something like plain, non-masterwork studded leather armor being 500gp.

Even with taking charisma etc into account the price you get asked for some stuff is crazy, if an items worth is 20g then its NEVER worth 2k. An Item selling value should be a %age of its worth value, atm its broken you may as well ignore the worth value...
You gotta basically give them some free stuff to up their attitude, which is a silly thing they took from DOS2. The higher their attitude towards you, the closer the price will be to the actual value. It should honestly be related to Charisma, perhaps you could roll Persuasion to lower the price of something or up the price of something you're selling. Y'know. Like in D&D.

You can't even see their attitude in the shop screen. You have to exit, right click on them and Examine them. That's where their attitude is.

It really shouldn't stick around. The price item values in 5e are intended to be static, bar for specific circumstances (as evidenced by the fact that in some adventure modules such as Dungeon of the Mag Mage, they specifically state if a merchant(s) marks up an item.

It may be "true to life" to have a markup, but the level of markup is insane and 5e was not designed around such a philosophy. It was more or less built around the idea that these things were static. Value itself in D&D is rather static - think of all the gems you can find worth specific amounts of gold.

In fact, the only time in 5e that price varies is in an optional rule for buying magic items in Xanathar's Guide.

So thats where their attitude is at, did not know that

There's definitely something affecting it, my character was trying by a suit of armor and it was 500 gold cheaper than if Lae'zel was trying to buy it.

The normal markup is about 2.5 and markdown is also about 2.5. make a bad barter offer and it gets worse, Give them stuff an they'll improve the ratios a little
All prices are measured in silver... Or copper. Not sure which.

Gold. It's all measured in gold (The gold icon is that of the Waterdeep gold piece). Terrible idea, we need more coins.
