Pretty cool.

AFAICT, the "battle for love" appears to usually take place in Act 2. (I'm unsure if that means it's impossible to happen in Act 3. That isn't stated. Seems that way, though.)
It seems you need the scene in act two, otherwise the relationship comes to an end.
I had the challenge to the duel pop up after my second or third LR in act 2.
If it didn't, either you missed some condition of continuing the romance or something glitched on you.
I think you just have to take enough long rests in Act 2 for it to trigger.
I learned this after being frustrated with the Shadowheart Swim scene. Guide would say some crap like "After multiple long rests" and you rest 10 times and nothing triggers. What they really mean is you have to long rest, go do a quest and long rest again. Doing this multiple times.
Missing a romance trigger will cause future romance triggers to never show up. Which you will miss triggers if you just barrel through the game.
