Also sadly most conversations get shunted to the player character now which means you more or less need to build a charisma based character so that limits things.
Before it shunted things to my character I liked playing a mix of eldritch knight/wizard then having shadowheart (ranger/cleric), Asterion (bard/thief) and gale (storm cleric/wizard).
Now that it shunt's conversations to the main PC I prefer to use either paladin/warlock/sorcerer, bard/sorcerer or with mods a Bloodrager/sorcerer.
I truly wish this game would've implemented a swap out ability for conversations. Sometimes certain character with pathfinding accidentally trigger events because they were you in the trigger event zone and you can't swap them out. Really can't understand the reasoning behind not implementing such a feature. I feel that would've made the game more interesting and honestly increase the roleplaying potential.
Karlash or Lae'zel because you always need someone that hit hard in your party
Jaheira because she is quite versatile in the city
The real solution would have been what you said ... let anyone in the party handle any conversation. Instead, they reacted to players being annoyed when their Tav was shut out of the conversation by just having Tav take over. It weakened the game rather than improving it.
Lae'zel does the killing, Shadowheart does the healing, and all the other tasks are taken by the other two.
Obviously if I am playing origin rather than Tav, things change around a little.
Tav - Durge (for the story line)
Shadowheart - Cleric (also best redeeming story arc in the game)
Gale - Massive AOE
Astarion/Karlach (depending on Tav's class) - Great dialogue and rogue skills or Karlach's barbarian hard-hitting skills.
Astarion, Karlach and alternating between Gale and Shadowheart depending on how much healing I think I'll need.
