Do this and after the big fight on the top of the tower, you can have her join your party when you have to go down a hole again.
This!
But she doesn't have to join you in the tower, she will tag along after you take her to fight on top of it, you know in case you wanted to bring other companions for story reasons.
You have at least two other characters with interaction in that "dungeon" so you are not obliged to recruit her right then and there. You can do so after the big fight in the dungeon, too.
I have lost her in my first run because I let the AI command her. In the second run, I had control over her and she even helps you with the fight on the top of the tower. In short, there are no cons of taking control over before the attack on Moonrise.
Initially if you didn't recruit her to join on top of the tower, she'd never join which was an awkward and short time window. Glad that's widened then.
You didn't have to actually have her in the party immedistely though. With a full party she'd go to camp.
Having her join you as a temporary party member during the assault prior to that is just Jaheira preservation as she is a bit of a Leroy Jenkins when 'leading' the Harpers there.
