It's Act 3, so let's talk about Orin's little shenanigans
(Act 3 Orin spoilers to follow)

On my third playthrough, and I still dream of not giving a damn about speed / urgency of killing Orin. Last two playthroughs I effectively had to kill her first to save her kidnappee (or at least I believed I had to).

So I've given up on trying to avoid the kidnapping -- I can avoid the trigger locations, but my party does need to rest -- but I'd like to calmly and methodically do everything in Act III without pressure to act. I want to kill Orin and Gortash as late as possible.

But I still see mixed info on if there is a set kill timer or not for the kidnap victims. I see statements on line of:

* X rests after kidnapping until she kills the kidnappee.

* From the wiki: "Although Rescue Orin's Victim appears to be time-sensitive - it is not. The party can take an infinite amount of Long Rests without Orin killing her kidnapping victim. The companion's life is only at risk once Orin is spoken to in the Temple of Bhaal."

* And there are yet others who claims it's easily possible to kill off Orin as the last thing you do in Act 3 and not lose the kidnapee.

Guidance appreciated, go nuts with spoilers, etc.

Thx
A

you can go to the house of hope and use the faucets - then you dont need to rest. Just dont steal the hammer/contract and dont trigger the raphael fight

I took my time with it -- doing all companion quests and side quests that I could find, including breaking into the House of Hope; ithen chipping away at Gortash's assets; and only after dropping him going after Orin. The only Orin-related bit I 'rushed' on was stopping the serial killer.

Result: Rescued the victim unharmed.

There is no time limit, so feel free to rest and explore as much as you want.

I took like 17 long rests after Gale got kidnapped on my Honour playthrough because I wanted to save Orin for the very end and he was completely fine and dandy.

There isn't a time limit. I always know when the kidnapping will happen because Halsin will ask if I'm interested in romance on the long rest before the kidnapping. I believe that's the game checking to make sure Halsin isn't a love interest before it happens, as Orin won't kidnap a LI as far as I know. So when he hits on me at camp, I know that a kidnap will happen at camp during the next long rest. But there really is no limit to it. Take your time and get to them when you can.

Some sources claim a timer kicks in when you kill Grandpa Sarevok, but not otherwise.

There also seems to be a variety of claims in this regard, and at this point I'm leaning toward, "nope, that doesn't trigger a timer also".

Does anyone know how this impacts a Durge playthrough vs regular Tav? Is there any difference in urgency/order of quests?

I've only played DUrges, I think it goes the same, more or less. I think the only difference is Orin wants to duel you as a DUrge.

Turns out that Orin's rather patient and honorable in that regard, for a homicidal psychopath.

Halsin told me that Orin made him eat little kids so now he doesn't really want to live anymore. I took him at his word, so I'm in no hurry to save him. Que sera, sera.

Excellent intel, team. Appreciated.

With this playthrough, hmmm, the person that gets kidnapped will be out of use for a long time. Presuming I save Yenna, of Laez / Hals / Minth / Gale, I think Halsin being taken interrupts the least quest arcs, right? (Does he have an Act 3 quest arc to speak of?)

Halsin doesn't have any Act III quest arc or real involvement that I'm aware of.

Gale literally has the most Act III impact in that you still have the option of having him fulfill Mystra's directive, but even that comes after dealing with Orin. Likewise, Lae'zel would appreciate it if you retrieve a certain artifact and use it to rescue a particualr NPC, but she doesn't need to be there for that heist; and if you go through with it and you do rescue her newfound hero, again this would be after dealing with Orin.

With you there, but I almost always bring people along for things non-mandatory quests they really care about.
