It's better than bad, it's Bard!
It is a great pick. A powerhouse surpreme you might not expect from the class name.
From most games id guess its a Supportfocused class.
Also you can get the proficency in Instruments later as well ...as a perk.
But you wont get any spells and buffs from the proficiency.
But you can start playing music for your Mates which will throw a coin for you...so .. thats something
It's charisma based so ideal main character that will do the talking.
Has many fun dialogue options and consequences.
There is no Bard companion in the game, so he will be unique in any party you choose to build.
It's very good caster with control, support and even some damage spells.
Bard is very strong class in DnD 5e in general and in BG3 it is one of the strongest classes.
Can be really good to dip 2 lvls into paladin or warlock if you want more damage options.
2 Paladin / 10 swords bard is a monster. Heavy armor, weapon choises and smites from pally. Spell slots and spell list versatility from Bard. It is almost too good with so many options how to play each encounter. You can buff, tank, heal, control and dps. Not all at once but you can approach each fight with different strategy with just one character.
Does that answer your question? :D
Sam Riegel approves.
Bard is quite interesting because you get some unique dialog which was also quite funny at times. I am yet to do a full bard-only playthrough but yes in my humble opinion bard is totally worth it, also one hint... Play a song next to Volo, you can thank me later.
Otto's kind of make it all worth it.
