Other news: this bug appears to be triggered by two mods, make sure you update Party Limit Begone Legacy to 1.7.4, and you might want to disable BG3 Mod Fixer.
I have the same issue. A quorum of Redditors, fwiw, have ID'd this and other issues (unable to give Dammon some Infernal Iron to fix Karlach in A1, for instance) and have concluded it's a hotfix 16 bug where key/quest items are not being detected in inventories.
I'll update if I find a fix/can confirm the source of the bug.
There is a strong consensus those two are the worst culprits. There MIGHT be others.
If you can, disable Mods and see if you can get past the block point. Then, if you want, can turn them back on.
Good Luck
Possibly. I'm really wondering if you could answer one other question.
Do you have the Windows Mod Manager? If so, it can tell you which mods have BG3 Mod Fixer embedded in them.
If you can find out ... can you tell me if BFE has BG3 Mod Fixer embedded in it?
I have to ask: the Mac Mod Manager cannot "see" whether that is inside other mods.
I have my suspicions embedded mod fixer may be causing problems now, just as it has been with the Epilogue in the past. (And maybe other issues).
BFE DOES contain BG3 Mod Fixer. Just saw this at Nexus forums.

Disable it. AND, now, I'm pretty convinced, that embedded BG3 Mod Fixer is a problem for Hotfix 16 also. Cuz yes, there are reports of folks with BFE having this same problem, and I think that's the cause.
I turned off the one mod I was running - HUD/UI cleanup - and reloaded the game. I dropped the key/quest item on the ground and picked it back up with my Tav, and the "press J to view" alert popped.
Cheers m8.
Turning off the mods helped!
Thank you all <3
