If, say, you change Gale to a barbarian, Wyll to a Selunite cleric, and Shadowheart to a wild magic sorcerer their companion quest lines won't change and will make a lot less sense, though.
Only downside is RP/immersion. Gameplay mechanics unaffected except for the class change itself.
You can always make up a head cannon as to why though lol like "oh gales magic/knowledge was taken by his goddess" so you play him as a martial class, and unless he can get that favor back he remains with 0 magic.
