But they are not just chilling in Avernus - they are actively searching for a cure. It is mentioned in the epilogue that they've found a promising lead (a blueprint).
I kinda get it - gamers are used to tying up all the loose ends in the game before the final battle, here it's different. Larian moved some stuff off-screen (or I guess they initially wanted to kill Karlach for some drama, but then players pressured them into saving her).
The epilogue is pretty much the traditional happy ending for all, and Karlach seems very uplifted and inspired, so I don't get the "dead puppy" vibe at all :) But to each their own.
When I romanced Karlach, I went with her in the end to Avernus. And I knew she would be just fine. We'd get her sh!t fixed and get home. We had a promising lead. Promising is like guaranteed in games.
I'm with you. Love the game. But it's got to end somewhere. The writers gave us hope though. Who knows, maybe there will be resolution in the next installment.
If you let her get turned into a mind flayer she gets an ending where she lives the rest of her life as a mind flayer and is different, but says she's happy soooo
