I love how if you just close his door before you fight him, all the skels outside don't join the battle.

You could fast travel away, but it turns out you don't need to -- when Balth dies, so do they.

I'm actually not sure. I just remember seeing a youtube video of him demanding his mother back in dialogue, so I know there's a way.

With one give more XP?

This was surprisingly hard to find out via the internet. So I did some sleuthing.
You get about 1565 xp from the Shadowfell version of the fight.
And about 980 xp from the smaller fight if you fight him when you first meet him.

So it's about a 600 xp difference in favour of the Shadowfell version (not counting any additional quest xp it might give which I couldn't find out).
