Patch 8 is going to destroy current save with mods?!
So the next huge patch is on the way and I'm just about to enter act 2 in my current playthrough which took me almost month irl to get there. I play with ~30 mods intalled (via BG3MM + script extender) and i've got a feeling patch will tear my save into shreds. Are there any suggestions on how not to loose my progress?

Likely because your are using BG3MM + script extender some mods won't load in patch 8. Best advice is to backup your saves regularly. They may also allow people to stay on patch 7 like I finished the game on patch 6 refusing to go to patch 7.

Very likely… So either don´t update or start new game.

A patch will never break your savegame. Incompatible mods will.

It probably will. Might not, but don't count on that. Even better chance if you wait for your mods to be updated.

Depends on the mods. I ran a save with around 50 mods that I was playing at various points in Patch 5,6, and 7 without it breaking, but there's always the possibility at least some mods won't work correctly until they're updated.

The most likely mods to become incompatible with Patch 8 will be non-mod.io Nexus mods, (I mean the ones that have never moved over to mod.io and Toolkit versions), especially those based on script extender. Folks may have to wait on Norbyte having to update it again.

There probably will need to be updates even for mod.io mods in some cases, but those will be easier to do, probably quicker, and fortunately (at least if you are in Windows) should be simple and easy to obtain those updates through the in-game mod manager. Just hit the blue update arrow.

As always, if you're a mod user, you may need to wait while your mods get updated for compatibility. It could be days, or if working out the incompatibility is more problematic, longer. The issue with saves is this: in some cases, if you disable an incompatible mod, and then try and load a modded save containing it, you may not be able to load the save.

That problem isn't indefinite - again if you wait to where the mod gets updated for compatibility, and enable it, you should be able to load the save that contains it.

If you have an incompatible mod whose author has left for la-la land and made it abandonware and isn't going to update it, alas you may be hosed, and you picked the wrong horse, bucko. Be wary of using Nexus mods, too, that haven't been updated in a year or more. They're gonna break in Patch 8, and you're likely just screwed.

While generally true, there is always a small risk that your setup is somehow incompatible with the patch and it doesn't work. Just like OS patches, they can't really account for every single combination of hardware and software. So the risk is small that an unmodded, vanilla save will not be compatible, it is not zero.

It appears that you might be able to rollback to previous versions of the game using the Steam beta feature. If you go into Baldur's Gate 3 -> Settings -> Betas you can see Patch 6 being listed as a build there, so I believe they'd do the same with Patch 7 once Patch 8 rolls out en masse.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but if it does end up destroying your save-files/mods, you know where to look for a potential way to continue playing 'til your mods get updated by their maintainers.

Just be aware if you do that to backup you save file because if you save on patch 7 you can load it on patch 6. I'm assuming they will do the same for patch 8.

You can simply, not update BG3. At all. I'm also pretty sure you can opt into specific builds. Finish current run, then update.
