Hold option
I know there is a hold for action in combat now. However, I have no clue how to use it.

Can someone please explain this to me like i am an 8 year old? :)

Thank you.

Like, skipping/passing turn to the end of the round to act last? Not that I know of or if that's even a thing in the 5E ruleset in general.

There is. It is in the game and it is part of 5e.

There is only holding a single action, not a whole turn in 5e. And I'm not aware of this being in the game.

I only know of the skipping the entire turn until next round but not holding turn to act later. Perhaps I've been blind the past few runs? Hmm. Either way, if you're asking for the second one, it may or may not be added down the road.

I'm talking about holding an action in combat. I'm not sure what the confusion is.

How is this done in the game? I know it is in the game. I just don't know how to use it.

Never saw holding action for later it in the game, never used it.

Only slightly comparable feature is that they use shared initiative when no enemy is between player controlled characters initiative.
You can kill off the enemies in between your characters in the initiative order and when two or more of your characters are next to each other you can pick any one of those to act first. (the small portraits of characters on the top of the screen signify initiative order, so focus on single enemies between portraits of your own characters to quickly allow you to take advantage of the shared initiative)

In shared initiative you can move 1 character into melee with an enemy, have the other move into range and kill the enemy with advantage and then move the first character again to reach a new enemy.

I have a bow. I know there is a monster about to come around a corner. I hold my attack until I see him come around the corner.

How do I do this in the game?

You can not as far as i am aware

you can react when that person hits you as it comes around the corner, but there is no "overwatch" like xcom

Can't. Isn't implemented. Or if it is implemented it is implemented in a way that isn't intuitive enough for me to pick up on it.

Gotta love how everyone here just sees what they want and not even try to understand what people are saying amirite?

To actually answer the question, I don't believe you can.

One of the many things, SOLASTA, got right in terms of game mechanics was the ability to hold a basic attack until opponents were within range (at the time I last played it was limited to a single action - bow shot, cantrip, or strike. When it was your turned you selected hold attack (or some such) and the game waited. Incidentally, if the round ended and your held action did not occur, you lost it and new round started.

You can not do this in BG3, though it is available in Solasta.

You have not much actions here.
No dodge action.
No 'ready' action.
No search...

plus they have stuff like shove, jump, and hide being bonus actions instead of the main actions and movement that they should be
I dont think this is in the game, I wondered it myself.
What you can do is stealth before combat. Have one character intiate combat, then your other characters can jump in whenever but most of the time it doesnt work out for me so well because if they get close enough to be able to do anything they usually have to roll initiative, only very long range attacks let me make sneak attacks from outside of combat and this isnt really holding an action but it can allow you to things like waiting around a corner.

the only other thing is shared initiative but thats not holding an action either.

I dont think itll be added because theres too many things you could do, although I supposed they could literally just make a button that says "hold action" and make it as literal as possible, I suppose thats possible but im not sure they will.
