You can afterwards close game instance 2-4. The characters from those game instances will remain in your game, and you will be able to control them as you would any other character. Afterwards you can save and load the game the same way as any regular singleplayer game.
One slight note: The game DOES treat all these characters as player characters, so you may have to sit / skip trough a select number of cutscenes once for every player character you have.
Also, running 4 instances could bring your system to its knees. I'd recommend setting the graphics to Low in the 1st instance.
