Do you need stillmaker for quest (MINOR SPOILERS!)

Just curious as I found the area you find it way before I got the quest, and now I'm pretty sure I sold it and can't find who I sold it to... do I actually need it to complete the quest? and are there any bugs known of where items vanish instead of staying in vendors inventory to be bought again? I'm definitely no reloading that far back so sadly if so I'll just need to count this quest as soft-locked.
