Is assassin any good?
This whole subclass is about surprise attack and first round advantages. But if all of that pass, have he any more in the sleeve, or he is just a regular rogue for the rest of the fight?

What is your subclass choice for the rogue? In the practical way.

I use Thief for the extra bonus action. The assassin is too conditionally specific for my tastes.

Honestly, Assassin is *way* better in BG3 than in the TTRPG, and I always spec Astarion into it. Surprise is so easy to get, just attack someone from stealth unless they have a specific feature negating surprise, that the guaranteed critical is massive damage.

Thief vs Assassin however, I prefer the latter. I never found myself needing an extra BA jump, shove, off-hand attack etc. The only real improvement 2 BA gives is 2 potions per turn, but that only works with healing potions thanks to stacking, and I don't think that matters that much.

Assassin's Infiltration Expertise I think is much less useful however, then Thiefs' Invisibility, although I never really saw a use for Disguise Self in general besides with Speak with Dead. Invisibility for free once per short rest is useful for getting past enemies into good sneak attack spots as well as beginning combat with surprise and a guaranteed Sneak Attack.

Assassin can be good... especially if you want to cheese.
Start as the dark urge, you will get a cape that makes you invisible after killing enemy
Send assassin solo, kill any enemy with him, move away from his last known location. It will cause enemies to stop combat, so you can repeat the process.
Proceed to kill any groups of enemies with this stinky cheese... it sadly doesn't work on bosses.

I chose to get the Sussur dagger so that extra silence is great at leveling the playing field in a lot of battles.

i would recommend thief for a first playthrough, many encounters have dialogues before they start that you'll miss using an assassin to start.

Theres a build where u get ranger/warlock/rogue. U get the lock pact which u cant get blinded, with ranger gloomstalker and with rogue, assassin. U use darkness on u making enemies cant attack u with ranged attacks and if they get inside, get blinded. U can get invisible or even reset combat cause they cant see u if they are not inside. Maybe is not what u look for or extremely OP but it works. The problem is its boring to play it.
