karlach and laezel are both melee combat oriented so one of them should be respec'd to some other class

That's pretty much my party, just started act 3. I haven't respec'd anyone. My character is a bard with talk to animals and high charisma/persuasion.

just experiment with respecting them?
its cheap anyway, keep trying till you are satisfied
i would argue two melee heavy hitters are a little bit redundant but it could still work

I think class balance is OK. You may want to roll a bard or warlock, as this is not a socially astute or charismatic party as is.

With that setup you'd only be missing a wizard

I've run it. My Tav was a Lore Bard to fill face and rogue roles. Respeced Lae'zel to Wizard. Party covered.

If you're committed to using Shadowheart for the entire game then respec her out of her awful trickery domain for sure.

Karlach can get speak with animals through Wildheart. I don't remember ever needing to persuade an animal to do anything, so she can cover pretty much all of that.

If you really want speak with animals yourself though, probably go with Warlock and take the Beast Speech Inovcation or Bard.

You don't need to respec them. Lae'zael can handle traps and most locks with astral wisdom set to dex. Then I used knock on my sorc for harder locks.

I didn't respec Shadowheart because she does fine on tactical anyways and I prefer to keep her lore-appropriate. Unfortunately there was stupidly only ONE enemy that had high AC, but for that one dude invoke duplicity was clutch.

You should respect your companions....hehehe

Men are just better at everything.

even if I am keeping shadow a cleric, I respec her to war domain, because the spells you get with war are better than pass without trace, and other pooh spells that trickery domain has.

Unless you're playing on Tactical difficulty, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Maybe having your Tav be a Bard would round out the magic/CHA deficit, but any party comp can beat the game and get plenty out of the story.

Potions of talk to animals are extremely cheap and easy to make and buy. Shadowheart might be happier as light or life domain but otherwise this is a strong team. Your PC can be literally anything with this team, I went halfling performance bard for lighthearted friendly dialogue reasons (tactician) and I haven't struggled with content so far. Zooming through act 1 encounters at least, and people say it only gets easier.

My preferred party setup is 2 martials, a support, and a caster.
Karlach and Laezel are good martials, and Shadowheart is an excellent support if you get her out of that icky trickery domain.
Would probably want to do a charisma caster like Bard, Warlock, or Sorc for spell slinging and smooth talking.

Edit: Something you could do is Sorcerer, and take an immediate 1 level dip at level 2 into Nature domain cleric for speak with animals and heavy armor proficiency before continuing as sorc for the rest of your levels. You get an amulet that gives speak with dead super early on too, so that isn't an issue.

2 martials with how strong they are in BG3 is not a problem.
But since you have 2 martials and a cleric, your character should be some arcane caster.
I'd go bard or Sorc, for talking and buffs.
Sorc can twin haste on the 2 frontliners and that is almost auto-win even on tactician.
