its because larian couldnt figure out how to design for short people

No, it's true! Think about it; no short people as companions, period. If you played the first two games this stands out quite a bit as both those games had dwarf or gnome companions.

There should also be the option to join the bugbear and giantess in the shack, not just the option to leave them be.
