Rolan is at the Last Light Inn at the start of act 2. He leaves to try and rescue his companions who are imprisoned at Moonrise.
He should leave a holo-message at the bar in Last Light where he was sitting, and interacting with that will start a quest to go check up on him.
In my save I unfortunately missed this quest and only found out about it after doing Shadowfell, at which point he was dead there, with 2 ghosts.
What part exactly are you at and what are you doing where it says he died?
This is my third playthrough, i know where he is and how his quest goes. He just disappeared from the map AFTER i saved him.
Buuuuuut, i ♥♥♥♥♥♥ around more times to know what the ♥♥♥♥ was going on with him.
One of those he became agressive after he stepped on the fire on the ground.
Other i noticed he was taking curse damage, even with a torch on his hand, so i cast light on him and he still took curse damage.
And finally, i had to put sort of a block on the ground so he doesnt step in any burning area, casted light on him again and let him disappeared on turn mode where i could heal him when he took damage. It worked. xD
At least twice in my games he either was dead by the time I found him or was already a shadow cursed undead land in one case he was alive but afflicted by the shadow curse and when I saved him he died and became shadow cursed undead .
I am guessing something triggers his fight with the shadows from very far so often by the time you get to him the fight is over and he is done.
It’s annoying but yea it’s buggy as hell, the entire shadow curse is bugged the way random NPCs like Demmon can run in it and die
You don't have to interact with anything. You can just rush to the area to the left of the Moonrise docks below the Toll House and he'll be there. I recommend doing it ASAP - because otherwise you could trigger his fight "off screen" and he will die from the environment. And even when you manage to defeat shadows and rescue him after the dialogue you have to heal him because the curse damages 20 per turn and he might bug out and decide to hang around there for too long and die.
It's quite stupid design to be honest. You might be failing "to tick that box" through no fault of your own. Rescuing helpless NPCs who die from the wrong wind blowing their way was never my cup of tea.
well, that explains my headache. I was almost leaving him behind, cause damn this made me really mad.
You'll encounter him in Baldurs Gate City but it's not like there is a whole new quest around him there :)
There is the Night Song quest "around" him, and i dont want to take chances of him not being there and bug the whole thing too ansjkdnsjkandjksandjksad
If he has already been killed by the shadows, don't approach or kill them. Instead, grab his location from the projector he left in the inn. Then position yourself just outside the ring and use the script extender console or similar to give the following commands:
Osi.DB_Dead:Delete("b6a3a9e9-b6eb-4c19-ab3f-4c431178fe1b")
Osi.DB_PermaDefeated:Delete("b6a3a9e9-b6eb-4c19-ab3f-4c431178fe1b")
Osi.Resurrect("b6a3a9e9-b6eb-4c19-ab3f-4c431178fe1b")
Osi.TeleportTo("b6a3a9e9-b6eb-4c19-ab3f-4c431178fe1b", GetHostCharacter())
He probably needs to be properly dead for this, although never tried with him as a zombie. Now he should spawn healthy and head for the shadows. Just escort him and kill them. That should trigger the conversation and make him return to the inn.
If the shadows are already dead, I'm not sure if this will work, but you will probably at least have to set the appropriate flags:
Osi.SetFlag("ad212abc-6ab6-9923-6c3f-ebae3d7ba8a7")
Osi.SetFlag("a00234f3-699d-7055-dd19-a8814f9d5d4d")
Additionally, when going through the game files, I noticed some flags that sounded relevant. Not sure if they are necessary. Probably related to other acts, but I cleared them just in case and it seemed to work:
Osi.ClearFlag("47b8a371-e4a9-40e6-bc0f-18ac582142b9")
Osi.DB_GlobalFlag:Delete("GLO_Prodigy_State_Defeated_54df9b47-fe34-3cbc-1a52-e539924c6613")
Osi.DB_GlobalFlag:Delete("GLO_Prodigy_State_PermaDefeated_d9ddfe5f-6658-4c63-bacc-bbcd50940c21")
Osi.DB_GlobalFlag:Delete("GLO_Prodigy_Knows_Dead_908e8264-f675-c137-aaa0-c31b5eeac3b1")
I hope this helps at least someone. Took me two days to figure this out =)

From a purely practical gameplay viewpoint, rescuing Rolan is pretty useful IF you're going to kill Lorroakan. He takes over the Ramazith tower if Lorroakan dies (which of course will be most people killing him with Dame Aylin). His "Gather Your Allies" is a very destructive AoE spell which you can use once. Basically it's him bombardnig your enemies with the tower's arcane cannons. It's the same one you can get if you surrender Aylin to Lorroakan. But then, if Rolan takes over the tower, you can have both.
Aside from that, other than the sting of not having rescued him, or not getting the XP for saving him, his death doesn't matter that much.
