With how important the persuasion skill is getting expertise on it is very viable imo and therefore going 1 bard is a viable move if you prefer to talk yourself through encounters. If you prefer to blast your way through go for 12 sorcerer.
Sorcerer is honestly best on its own, if you multi class it you are better off with 2 lvls warlock or something like that
My main has 10 charisma and honestly at least through 5 levels i still pass a ton of checks. I do get +2 intimidation from dark urge. So that helps. But honestly Charisma is kinda overrated. I got no problem failing checks
ok completely off topic if you want to create a band in a pseudo RPG check out Rising Star 2. Very enjoyable game
First, by taking Bard, you get Cutting Words, allowing you to impact attack and saving throw rolls. Second, you get Magical Secrets, allowing to learn any spells up to level 3. Here you must get Command. In addition, you can pick SPirit Guardians or Hunger of Hadar. Command is the core of the build as it gives a total control of enemy actions.
Next you will get Sorcerer and Hat of Fire Acuity. The latter is extremely important as it will allow stacking Arcane Acuity with Scorching Ray for that 100% spell success chance. Moreover, Sorcerer, gives metamagic and some good offensive and defensive spells - shield, fireball, lightning bolt, etc.
With this you will breeze through the late act 2 and all of act 3. I have written a build with full detailed progression and gear picks for each Act - https://gamestegy.com/post/bg3/984/sorcerer-bard-multiclass-build-lorecerer
Enjoy!
But for a sorcerer there are better melee options. My rapier was fast replaced with a staff giving more spell options.
And usually range attacks useful for a sorcerer. Most Cantrips will be more effective.
My next sorcerer will be Wyll with 2 lvl Warlock. Sadly missing a feat and 6th lvl spells...
