If played like you did, yeah it could work. That is one of the reasons why the romance is so "easy", otherwise it would not work with the little amount of approval gains due to the splits. But they cannot romance the same character.
Pretty cool though that in theory you could have three or four user created characters that could have relationships with different characters. Though you'd have to either know exactly what moments trigger what, or download some sort of mod that would boost approval numbers each time you get them to even out splitting the interactions between different characters
