For Wizards (Gale), what subclass did you pick?
I originally went with evocation, thinking Gale would be my aoe nuker...
But I've been using him more as utility, and found Divination's passives way more useful--and Divination kinda fits Gale's story more!

Abjuration. Gale can easily maintain concentration spells because he can avoid damage more.

Gale can be any, but lorewise I think transmutation and abjuration make most sense for him lorewise. He is adamantly against necromancy and is against blasting/ being cruel to enemies so no evocation either.

His default subclass is literally evocation though…

Yes. I agree it's weird. Might be an oversight or they decided it's best for new players. It seems like they altered his personality last min in act 2,3. I do not remember gale being as picky about magic in EA. Especially since he can be convinced into using necromancy and tadpoles in act 2.

IS he against Necromancy? He didn't seem to mind me running around with hordes of undead minions.

Transmutation

But its probably better to give the alchemist job to a hireling...

Yes He throws a fit when you try to convince him to side with the necromancer in act 2. The necromancer is called Balthazar. He believes mystra will punish him.

He also mentions he would never consider using shadowmagic or magic sources from shar. I believe it' took me an 18 to convince him. Took me 3 tries in my game to hit the check

Right, in act 2 there's a ritual in Balthazar's room in Moonrise Tower.
If he goes the 'good' path, I believe her gets a concentration buff.
He he goes the 'evil' path, you get a summon.

I went conjuration cause I just like to summon creatures to help fight.

It ultimately depends on the spell selection in the game. For example, necromancy has only a handful across all spell levels. It's a waste. Evocation is a given because you'll be throwing around fireballs a lot. Sadly wizards aren't good at disabling and debuffing in 5e due to the concentration mechanic. Transmuter offers good buffs in the form of Transmuters Stone.

Abjuration wizards with a hireling throwing on Cleric Bond level 2 spell. Plus high dex and mage armor and shield spell + shield and false life. makes Gale pretty untouchable as soon as you hit level 3.

straight 12 levels of wizard. High Int and Dex if you run out of spells or scrolls you can just dual wield daggers.

Gale makes several comments, both in dialogue and as random interaction quips, about Abjuration being his preferred school. So I really don't understand why they default him to evocation.

Abjuration's abilities are pretty boss though. That's how you make a mage-tank.

Yeah, I set up gale as the late payment guy too

Evoker Gale is very useful for crowd control with that ability to avoid hitting party members. He's my go-to for any fight that has annoying minions.

Diviner Gale is useful for altering rolls. Portent dice are sometimes preferable to abilities like "lucky" because they give you a specific number rather than a re-roll or adv/disadv. You can see if they'll be a good option or not.
