Fight against Grym
(spollers)

Ok, I really hate when a game changes its mechanics for a certain fight in the game, and nothing works...you have to find out how to defeat a monster...and no, it is not even easy to pull off...because the monster needs to be on an exact spot...

After trying several things I had to look it up...and it's exactly the fight I hate....you don't deal damage, everybody keeps missing their chances up to 50 or 60%, Astarion is down to 25% hitting a large monster? Yeah right...makes sense...

So the only way to defeat Grym is to lure him under the hammer? But how?

One of your char has to pull the lever...even if others try to lure him he goes to the one next to the lever...

Solving such puzzles is ok, but not if a stupid AI has to step on an exact place...I have 4 chars and two minions...how do I know who will lure Grym? I once had him next to the hammer...the hammer missed...how should he be excatle under the hammer and a couple of times?

This is not fun.....it's frustrating and makes all your previous tactics with weapons, abilities and spells useless.

Reminds me of the stupid Micro Machines level where you have to defeat 3 AIs...one pushes into you, one fires stuff at you and the other ones simply dashes forward to score a point....and you have to race in circles for 2 hours till RNG is in your favor....

Or the fight against Gollum in Lord of the Rings - Return of the King...where every attack does nothing, but push attacks next to the ledge...so you can push Gollum from the rock....once you know it is not that hard, but finding that out is tedious....and reading guides isn't fun.

Rant over...

The game has been awesome for 70 hours in act 1. :D
But this part is just plain annoying.

Bring blunt weapons. I did for the first time today on this tactical run.

I am still o_O at how fast Grym went down, never needed to use the forge hammer and got the related achievement for not using it. Lae-zel soloed him. The biggest hit she did with her maul was nearly 200 damage. Lvl 6 and no mods.

Found at Waukeen's Rest, upper floor room full of fireballs. An elixir of fire resistance makes it easy to explore and clean out the burning inn as it makes you immune to burning damage.

Killed him in two turns of combat in tactical difficulty. Pally and Fighter with 2h hammertime, hasted. Whyll just keeps away from combat to keep the haste up and Shadow buffs, heals and debuffs. Laz and Karlach combine for 200-300 turn and shadow drops shatters and acid casts to make up any difference. Kinda easy fight tbh.

You've got a ton of answers, but I just wanted to add one more vote for: USING THE HAMMER IS WAY MORE COMPLICATED AND NOT WORTH IT, BLUDGEON HIM
When you release the lava he becomes superheated and vulnerable to damage

keep him in lava and destroy him.
can spread his damage by changing whom delivers the last attack due to his threat assessment.
dont group to close together cause his attacks have a bit of aoe.
did it fairly with a battlemaster fighter, tempest cleric, sword bard and ranger/rogue

pre positioned shadowheart to open the valve and kept her there to keep the lava flowing
keeping her in range to cast bless on everyone, summoned a spiritual weapon.
then just pew pew'd him down

I beat Grym with respec my characters into 3 Open Hand Monks with Tavern Brawler and 1 mage with magic missiles. Open Hand Monks deals blunt damage that the boss is vulnerable. Magic Missile always hit, so I can use the mage to control where Grym will go with the Misty Step ability.

Use the freaking "examine" button. It's your best friend.

It's enough to give your frontliners blunt weapons and hit away. The only damage you should take is from quake, so you have a lot of time to kill him.

So, the way I beat that f~cker was to enter the forge with just Astarion and Lae'Zel. Lae'Zel was buffed for damage resistance by Shadowheart. Astarion is hidden next to the lava valve. Lae'zel is directly acorss grym spawn point. After the fight starts, laezel immediately uses jump extension on herself and positions herself such that Grym stands on the spot where he both can be hit by a hammer and is still superheated after a hammer strike. it's the spot somewhat in between the hammer lever and the lava break in the path on the left.

Grym charges, gets hammered. Laezel immediately jumps to pick and put on the armor. Next turn it's still superheated and gets hammered again as laezel jumps back to the lever. Mephits spawn and start messing things up, but laezel still lures Grym to the hammer again (if necessary by letting him clobber her once). Generally, Grym doesn't aggro on Astarion as long as you jump around on the half of the map across from the valve. Mehipts do, but by the point they reach astarion half of them are killed by the boss and the fight is almost over.

In total I hit Grym with normal weapons exactly 0 times

I killed it on Tactician without using the hammer at all with no cheese or repseccing my chars for the fight. Just gave Karlach and Shadowheart hammers. My char was a Lore Bard and I had Gale pumping out Magic Missiles.

This is the stupidest fight so far, have reattempted the fight 3 times as I did no harm to him in my prior attempts ( bug?). I have now gone 3 rounds (2 before he could even attack me as he was not "awake"- whatever that means) only using attacks he is at least 50% not immune to and with my level 6 characters have only hurt him 30 points out of the 300 (nearly half of my attacks have completely missed) - so how can you predict who he is going to target if your attacks completely miss!? He moves very inconsistently , sometimes it takes only 2 steps in a turn , others 6 steps , so there is no way to know how far he moves - he just went from one round disc over the crucible and past the area of damage of the forging mechanism and onto the opposite round disc in one turn and then nails Shadowheart (with her armor protection on ) and takes 3/4 of her hit points away - in one turn. I have had no real issues in the game so far other than rolling 1's fairly consistently ( like that not rigged -LOL) - but this is ridiculous. It seems you much better off with only 1 character on this fight so you can predict his movements as no character really can hurt him (50% of attacks completely miss) any how.

EDIT ( thanks for answers people) , but I figured out how that even though Gyrm is standing in lava , he is totally immune to everything - what the hell is up with that? So, I went back and turned on the lava ( even though it is clearly already on) - then Gyrm could be damaged again - how STUPID - so had no more difficulty.

Necroing an old thread, just to self-report on your skill issue
Masterful gambit. Truly exemplary.

But this part is just plain annoying.

the hammer can hit grym if hes right beside it too.

Ideally you want to bait him correctly from the beginning and he can run most of the distance between platforms, if not the entire way.
It's tricky, but doable. Not worth the effort though. Better gear down the road.

He nearly killed me on honor because of gimmick fight.

Mechanics != gimmicks

So magma mephit triggering opportunity attack on him resulting on the lost of aggro and his legendary affix triggering levers is a mechanic ?
