In PnP games, it's not so uncommon to see higher level PCs with rare traits they picked up through adventures. Good to see Larian implementing this.
Alfira will only teach you if you choose the "pick up lute" dialogue option. Don't ask her what the song is about at the first dialogue promt... that way you'll "just" encourage her, not also learn to play musical instruments. You might need to pass at least one of the two performance checks, I believe (Haven't failed twice, and haven't tested it, though).
