BG3 Class Opinion: Dual Wield
*CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR PEOPLE NEW TO THE GAME*

I came up with a class and want an overall opinion of it really. It’s a game progression class and doesn’t need any respecting at all throughout the game. It starts out with fighter, then rogue, to paladin, then finally ranger…

Starting Stats:
S: 8
D: 14
Con: 16
I: 10
W: 10
Cha: 16

*This build relies on the potion of hill giants strength* - Can be combated with gauntlets of hill giant strength located in act 3

1 level into fighter for two weapon fighting off rip. (A lot of people like the action surge but I gave it up for overall BASE damage)

3 levels into rogue, with the thief subclass, for early game extra attack

Move onto 5 levels into paladin for mainly the extra attack but also smites for extra damage (Take the defense fighting style for extra AC) Take the dual wielded feat

Finish off with 3 levels into ranger taking colossal slayer for 1d8 once a turn and hunters mark (Archery fighting style since dueling isn’t apart of the build)

With this setup you are continuously gaining damage throughout the game. Starting with two weapon fighting gives you an edge early game and getting that “extra attack” before anyone else. Leading into paladin gives you an extra attack but more importantly smites for that boss damage. And taking ranger for 3 levels gives you an extra, potentially, 8 damage a turn with colossal slayer.

Doing the math, in best case scenario, that’s potentially 84 damage without any smites but only on round 2 and up….

*This is determined using a basic 1d8 longsword with a +5 proficiency*

Any hag hair or mirror of loss ability improvements can be chosen by the player but I do recommend using the potion you receive, after forcing Astarian to give his blood, for yourself with the gauntlets of hill giant strength to improve it.

If anyone has anyway to improve the build let me know… I’ve been trying to make a dual wielding build for some time now and want to know what everyone thinks. You will DEFINITELY need to be cautious of how many spell slots you use cause you will be limited to 3 level 1 and 2 level 2 after hunters mark. That’s also favoring the idea you can hold concentration with hunters mark.

Let me know your ideas of the build 😌

I would prefer 6 levels of Battlemaster (2 feats, extra attack), 3 Gloomstalker and 3 Thief (or Assassin). The Paladin add doesn’t do much for me, but it sounds fun either way.

Some notes:
Pure fighter or pure paladin will outdamage this build with ez, think about it.
Paladin is only good with any magic class to expand smites uses, no smite - just a worse fighter class.
If you wanna play dual wielder - pick ranger instead of a paladin, mark is just better overall, also you can play 6/6 and you won't care much about range option since STR build bow gives you that range option.
if you want smites that badly - use bard instead of a fighter, you can use 10 sword bard, 2 paladin, 5 bard 7 paladin for aura, 7/5 for lvl 4 spell or 6/6 otherwise, you don't also need CON since you can just alfa strike an enemy to prevent damage, also bard gives you an option to smite 2 targets with a single flourish, to be still ok with overall game since it forces you to make a charisma-based Tav and you are pretty fat in terms of AC, just remember that DEX is the strongest stat in the game and bard can provide free 4 AC.

P.S 2handed build >>> any 1handed or two handed build, unless you bring end game assassin/thief build which can crit (with help of the rogue special attack) like 176 damage without illithid/ally buff with a single attack (once per round ofc, no crit - no damage, but you will do 70+ regular damage and a bit less off handed one or twos), just bring some kind of a sorcerer with hold person/hold monster spell.

Dual-wielding is underwhelming if you want your damage to come from attacks, and for smiting you want at least 1/2 spellcaster progression throughout your career, otherwise you end up with just too few spell slots.

If you want to leverage giant strength elixirs, going with archery style from Ranger or Fighter and using the Titanstring Bow and eventually upgrading with the Sharpshooter perk is much more potent. For extra attacks/damage consider specing into Gloomstaker or Battlemaster respectively with the latter giving you even more tools to reliably land those -5 to hit shots.

I had a fun dual wield crit build. Half Orc, 6 Fighter Champion, 4 Rogue Thief, 1 Cleric Tempest (retaliation / fog cloud and useful Cleric stuff) and 1 Warlock The Great Old One for crit aoe chance and Hex which can be nice.

Not strong but lots of options for stuff and was pretty fun to play in Honour Mode where I got to the start of Act 3 where I decided to wait for Update 7.
