Do I have to resurrect hirelings in order to dismiss them?
new to the game, basically I sacrificed a fighter hireling in order to get the sword of the astral plane. Can I just dismiss them without paying withers for resurrection or using a scroll?

Just talk to the hirelings and tell them they're no longer needed.

They're dead, I can't talk to them. i'm trying to find out if I have to pay the 200 gold to withers or waste a scroll in order to dismiss them

If you have to talk to them to dismiss them, and since they are dead, you can't talk to them...

for future reference in case anyone's interested, Withers will watch over dead companions and that includes Hirelings. Now I have a smoldering corpse just plopped in camp, but it's not taking up a companion slot which is good enough for me. RIP random fighter, you did what you were meant to do.

You can also just pay Withers to dismiss the hireling and then pick pocket Withers afterwards. he doesn't get mad if you fail and neither will your companions. Only Scratch and the Owlbear cub will initiate a fight but you can also pick pocket him in turn based mode to avoid them getting mad or just reload the game.
