Larian changed a lot of stuff from 5e rules to try to balance it out but some things are still just more useful statistically.
Myself I would discourage small races for a first play because their slower run can be rather unpleasant.
Otherwise it's very open, for more simplicity, a race with dark vision is a better first play choice. About speed only one subrace has a higher speed, it's wood elf, but it's not making it the best race choice for all classes and builds.
For class, it looks very open, so it's more about what you would prefer.
I just love the idea of a gnome throwing 3 times their height at enemies.
Once 2.0 comes along, I'll be going for Drow Gloomstalker, methinks.
Tielflings are so overdone in the first part of the game it made them go from the race I most wanted to play to the least.
It also has the added benefit of being the conversation guy, being CHA based.
