If you try to make things go on forever just because they're popular or profitable you end up with the Disney era of Star Wars.
It would be interesting to see what a Larian original post-apocalyptic game, but I'd be surprised if that's actually what they're working on.
Sadly given microsoft owns it and bethesda I doubt anyone has the kind of money they would demand.
And given the way larian was disgusted by how greedy WOTC was (so much so they terminated the contract to get away from them) I doubt they would want to work with mocrosoft anyway.
But it means Larian will hardly chain with another IP, myself I would have expect Shadowrun, more possible than Microsoft owned Fallout. But clearly it won't be any.
I don't know why there's players liking the Divinity IP, for me it's a weak one, lack of originality, is limited, feels sometimes more horror oriented and it's not appealing me.
But I suppose it's dead, their next game will be Divinity IP, too bad.
EDIT:
For the rules I find D&D is a burden on many points, typical is stealth attack not based on any positioning. Also if it has some facing optional rules, it seems very limited and improper for TB combats. But the weakest point is if build a party has some depth and choices because it's multiple characters, build of one character is very limited and lacking of more choices, it feels dated design for video game RPG.
Their next game is also not Divinity.
They're probably trying something pretty new.
A new IP looks bizarre:
- Sci fi is a heavier challenge and not 100% as popular than Fantasy.
- Post apocalypse is very limited and probably already too overused.
- Zombies is still having a serious fame of greedy topic.
- Viking achieved get a fame of greedy topic and is probably overused even if not yet in video games.
- History meaning not Fantasy is looking weird.
- Horror looks like a huge step elsewhere, hardly possible.
- Another existing IP than D&D looks weird for a dev supposed to have problem with last IP they just used.
- Another Fantasy own IP looks weird.
EDIT:
Prehistoric? Not bad, but then Prehistory Fantasy.
it's owned by microsoft now
But with Microsoft behind, it's clearly impossible, they even own Wasteland IP too.
That said there's no need of any Fallout IP to make a post apocalypse IP, except Post apocalypse feels overused already. The point for RPG is ruins allow better designs hence post apocalypse is a great setup base for RPG.
If we go there, a zombies post apocalypse IP could be fun but zombies has been overused.
EDIT:
In fact, what's missing in post apocalypse is post pollution climate disaster, it's even weird no game yet picked the topic, even if I have seen it as secondary aspect in a 4X.
I know, I know
