All I can suggest is to flee combat once it's just the owlbear cub left. Do not attempt to knock him out or attack him in any way. Also make sure to kill the owlbear mate first then the mom. Never long rest in the cave just to be safe or dismiss companions while in the cave. Never poison the goblin camp until after you get the owlbear cub because if you happen to poison one of the goblins who are part of the chicken chase game, it can also cause bugs related to the owlbear cub not showing up at the goblin camp later on. I'm not 100% certain any of these things will or will not ruin your chances of recruiting the owlbear cub, but from everything I've looked up trying to find solutions to this, if you want to avoid potential bugs with getting the cub, you might have to play it extra safe.
If you really want the owlbear cub, I've heard of people using console commands to change flags to get him to show up in circumstances where he bugged out and didn't. Since I play on ps5 and steamdeck, don't have access to any of that but that might be an option for you.
I tried this bu the cub just stays in the cave, and wont show up at goblin camp
Later saved the cub from the goblin camp and I assume it will be going to my camp at some point.
Based on my observations and searches there are several bugs related to the owlbear thing:
1. Entering the goblin camp and seeing the chicken in the first place may block the owlbear cub from going there afterwards. You can still get the cub, though.
2. There is something that I don't know blocking the immediate goblin killing event (which means it may still happen after 2+ long rests). I once slaughtered the entire blighted village before entering the cave and the owlbear mom refused to die during the 1st long rest.
3. On the first encounter, leaving the cave (including returning to camp) before interacting with owlbear mom will permanently block the goblins killing event. Even if you speak with the mom later and back down, they will still live on forever. This is the bug that most people encountered.
4. If you've made mistake no.3, you can still get the cub by killing its mother. However, in Honor Mode, you have to slay the owlbear mate before the owlbear mother. If you kill the mother first, the cutscene will not be triggered properly, and the cub stays hostile forever.
In Honor Mode, there are methods to prevent the mother from summoning her mate, in which case just killing the mother triggers the cutscene as it's supposed to.
As I noted earlier, Command: Halt will stop the summoning for as long as it's in effect. So will knocking her prone. You've got to be careful with HOW you knock her prone, though. If she successfully saves against a trip attack, she'll summon as normal.
There might be other, possibly more dependable, methods to lock her down, but I'll let others do the legwork to test things out.
