how does multiplayer work exactly?

a friend of mine is gonna get this game and im thinking about making a new character when we play together does this make sense? or should i use my old one?

one player hosts, the other connects, and you each control your rolled character and can allocate (can be changed) any NPCs between you.

if your friend joins an existing game, they have to play one of the NPCS in your party. You can still re-roll them to any class setup, and you can get a wither's zombie for them for MOST but not all races.

But its best if you both start over with new, so each has a custom character they really want to play.

edit: if there is a way to roll a fresh character into an existing game, I didn't see it. Even so, they have missed part of the game...

You can either start a new save together (if you go into multiplayer, create a lobby from the main menu), or he can join your save and create a character of his own, if you load up the save then invite him through the multiplayer button in the pause menu.

so if i join my friend who is making a new game i automatically get to make a new character?

Yes. If you are going to be joining your friend's game you will have to create a new character. Each Tav is specific to the game that it's in because each story is unique.
