You left them no choice, though.
- speak to the gnomes,
- speak to the tieflings,
- give the gnomes the hammer from the wardens office
- open the tieflings cell
- destroy the wall in the cell
(- or you open the cellar to the gnomes, and destroy the wall from the backside)
- go with the tieflings to the boat, the gnomes should be already there.
If you killed every guard in the cellar and at the tower docks outside, you should als able to flee with the prisoners the other route.
It is what you can do, if you want to rescue the prisoners.
I wonder what you mean about the lvl 6 paladins.
First time I went to the Shadowfell before Moonrise, so they all died.
Next time I opened the cells and they all ran out the open doors and died.
After that I have always killed every prison guard first, then given Wilbren his hammer. He immediately breaks out the back wall, then runs to where the tiefs are. And then ... sometimes he just stands there doing nothing. But if I break down their wall myself, everything gets back on script. Everybody runs to the boat, and they get it free. Then either I go with them to Last Light or I tell them to go there without me.
