INSANE update size
why? what is the point of this? 100 gb of kissing animations? absolutely unreasonable, $60 game being ran by people with the technical aptitude of a 2nd grader using mspaint in the school computer lab

it's 17gb, it patches 139gb of data

It's literally less than 20GB. It explains this on Steam when you go to download

I ported over the patch notes into Sheets. Subracting headers and blank rows and what not it was just over 1000 changes (overwhelmingly bug fixes, not kissing animations).

Shield bash works again
Dungeon Delver works for the first time
A jillion other things got fixed.

Take my hard drive space, Larian. Delighted they've gone scorched earth with bugs.

After the 20 GB, it started downloading the hole game for me aswell.. As much as I like Larian, they are wierd with their patches. I hope they release updates not on weekends in the future.

There is, way, way more than just new kissing animation in this patch. A lot of QoL stuff, bugs fix, and more. I invite you to read the full patch note.

I have 40 GB free space left, but can´t download.
Is it advisable to deinstall and reinstall ??
It seems to me that, with the download i have practically 2 times the same amount of GB on my ssd installed.

you won't be able to patch the game with 40gb free space, you need at least 140gb+

no it didn't you just lack reading comprehension, it patches over the game afterwards, it doesn't download the entire game at any point

What is happening is that you have the full game install size. Then, you need to download the update.

That increases the space needed by: Full Game + Packed Update.

Then, the game needs to unpack the update, so you have: Full Game + Packed Update + Unpacked Update.

Then, the game patches, so you have: Full Game + Packed Update + Unpacked Update + Backed up patch file target.

Then, the extra files are all deleted and the game is down to slim, trim fighting size.

So you can see where the problem is if a system is running on the ragged edge of memory.

Solution: For patch day, transfer (using Steam tool) the game installation to an external SSD drive. Patch it there. Then use the Steam tool to transfer it back to your target drive when the size is back down. :)

Very fast. Very safe. Very efficient.

Good Luck

130+GB of kissing animations?! Sign me up!!
/s

(Those who know me in this forum know I couldn't give a flip about it. Based on the patch notes, I'm also certain that the vast majority of that download is fixes, not kisses.)

The patch data is 17.3GB. It, then, has to be inserted into the existing data.

There are two ways to do this:

1) Keep the old bad data and stick the new data to the end of the files and change pointers to the new data. Shorter process but causes bloat and fragmentation and makes it difficult to keep track of everything from a modder and developer perspective. This will almost always end up with a complete refresh after some time (everything being downloaded all over again). Sony allows an alternate version of this where old data is ignored and the operating system's file mapping is altered to include the new data. Your SSD becomes a bowl of spaghetti with who knows how much old data.

2) Copy the old data to a temporary location while altering the data during the process and moving the completed new packages to replace the old data. Longer process, requires more space during the process, keeps things tidy. Depending on how many files are touched with new data will determine how much extra space is needed during this kind of patching process. It never needs a complete refresh as it always matches the refreshed image. (The size of extra space this needs tells me that much, much, much more stuff is altered than animations.)

As for those whose systems are doing the whole thing all over again, that tends to be system specific to Steam thinking there's something wrong with the existing install. It's not a Larian thing. It also might not be a Steam thing if you've done any modding/cheating. (I mean, if the file isn't identified as the correct one, it won't bother to try to insert data into it. It'll download a fresh copy, instead.)

@EricHVela hmm that was too smart for me to understand but I always thought Steam does sync the same way as Dropbox, iCloud etc, by running a diff and then be like "aaw yeea dis file be different, delet, download new file"

what's wrong with that?

If there are a series of large files that need updating, that's a large download versus 17GB.
