In general savegames are compatible unless you used mods.
A game restart - at least from a milestone - is still recommended.

Just turn off your mods. The savegame should still load.

Each savegame gets converted to work with the latest version. Even my savegame from release days still work because of that. However, due to additions of the game it is best to either start anew or from a milestone.
Milestones such as: savegame before Act transitioning/area transitionings for the first time.
A savegame you convert before entering the Lower City e.g. is more stable than after entering Lower City as there is less conversion to be done, and so on.
That is why one keeps milestone savegames such as
before Act 2
before second part of Act 2
before Act 3
before Lower City
