Class that is versatile for both Melee & Range.
Hello Everyone.

I wanted to know from all those pro players, is there a Class where I can use both Range and Melee. Like a ''pirate'' Pistol & Sword ect ect.

((FYI I know there is not Guns in Baldur's Gate.))

So to simplify, exsample. 1 hand crossbow and a Sword.

Finesse weapons have already been mentioned, but any class can be melee & ranged by wearing the Gloves of Dexterity. For example: If I create a Paladin with 17 STR & 10 DEX, wearing the Gloves of Dexterity raises DEX to 18.

Thank you

I created my own Rogue 2 / Battlemaster 10, with the Feat extra reaction. I stacked the class with all the reaction abilities Sentinel, Riposte, Protection, shield bash reaction, mage slayer and so on. Not the best damage but always a fun key player in every fight.

Ah, the good old "it's actually still my turn" build.

Warrior, bard, berserker, monk, barbarian, rogue, ranger, and even paladin can all use melee and bows to varying degrees of proficiency. No, there are no pistols, if that was a specific desire. ( In spite of what some people claim, though, yes, they DO have a place in a fantasy setting... )

But anyone other than the casters can use melee weapons and ranged weapons well depending on how you spec them. There's some variance: In a berserker's case, thrown weapons might be more effective than a bow. And in a monk's case, your fists rather than a sword.

Rogues are the common "pirate" class. In actual D&D, they even made a rogue subclass called the swashbuckler, I'm pretty sure based on PotC.
Except that it predates PoTC by a decade or possibly two.
The swashbuckling subclass was inspired by three earlier swashbuckling era's of Hollywood, the first one being as far back in the 1920's.

Swords Bard is the best melee ranged caster :>

Ranger works. They Get ranged and melee oriented spells and feats. Their class aesthetic fits the best as well imo. Build dex like homeboy said.

Str based throwers work well in normal at least. Throwing objects and small races is definitely top tier satisfaction. You've not played bg3 until you've tossed a halfling unto their friend who's in a cloud kill, insect swarm, bramble patch. Many throwable items can be found as well.

Any character can perform reasonably well at both melee and ranged combat in this game since thrown weapons are actually legit strong in BG3 compared to 5e RAW.

However, there is no dual wielding both a ranged and melee weapon simultaneously in the game.
This kinda reminds me that two things I wish game systems would incentivize more are both that and leaving a free off-hand.

I feel like a roguish type should use a dagger or rapier and nothing in the off hand but usually there's no advantage for not using a shield or second weapon. I can list the exceptions...on one hand :steammocking:

It's just better to focus on one or the other, due to sharpshooter or great weapon master, fighting styles, and itemization. You can equip gear and pick feats to make a great melee or great archer but not both without being inefficient.

I like fighter archers, because they can equip a finesse weapon + shield in case they get swarmed but otherwise are just better rangers with the manoeuvres.

Point blank with xbow feat lets you stab and shoot like a pirate and points for being cool, but honestly, its very wasteful** of a feat and dual xbows are sort of an all-or-nothing build for max/min, though the setup is FINE to be weaker with one or the other, it will never be maxed out for both types of attacks. IMHO its a ranged build that can stab someone if they get too close and even that is not necessary if you have the point blank feat, you just shoot them in the face and never draw a sword.

I am sure its all been covered but I want to mention that a throwing frenzy barb is also quite nasty as a ranged character. The special throw attack knocks them prone and open to melee attacks, which is just brutal, sort of like a knock-down monk.

any dual wielder needs rogue 3 to get that 2nd offhand attack.

**this is no problem if your class is fighter/rogue. A fighter 8 rogue level 4 will have extra feats anyway, or a rogue3 build will recover its 'lost' feat. A ranger 9 rogue 3 is going to struggle to fit in an extra.

Any crossbow wielder can get a feat that enables point blank shooting without disadvantage

Any melee fighter with STR maxed out can throw stuff at range and deal higher damage than if he was using range weapon.

You can have warlock of Pact of the Blade and added charisma to eldritch blast there you have it, just need to dip 1 fighter first to pull this
