Class that is versatile for both Melee & Range.
Hello Everyone.

I wanted to know from all those pro players, is there a Class where I can use both Range and Melee. Like a ''pirate'' Pistol & Sword ect ect.

((FYI I know there is not Guns in Baldur's Gate.))

So to simplify, exsample. 1 hand crossbow and a Sword.

Rogues are the common "pirate" class. In actual D&D, they even made a rogue subclass called the swashbuckler, I'm pretty sure based on PotC.

wielding a melee weapon and a ranged weapon both at once serves no functional purpose in this game. You can equip both a ranged and a melee weapon set and then switch between them depending on what you need.

Since it's free to swap between melee and ranged setup, any Dex-oriented class can usually do both fairly well. I'm mainly thinking about rogues and bards. However, this also means that there's probably no point in going "pirate mode" with melee weapon + hand crossbow. Just go weapon/shield and ranged weapon and swap between them.

Any high dexterity class or multiclass like example 5 levels ranger 7 levels rogue you are capable in melee with finesse weapons and ranged weapons

Another option if you want something more magical is to do an eldritch knight or a sword pact warlock, both of which can do damage up close or throw some spells.

Well, ranger, especially gloomstalker, could be your pick.
They are proficient in martial weapons (so GS too) and they have a very good synergy with bows.
Gloomstalkers add some magic tricks to the basket and a very good alpha strike (3/4 attacks first turn).
Otherwise, but it may be a little outside your preference, you could go for a class who excel both in melee combat and ranged magic damage (especially AoE). My favourite in this case is probably Spore Druid, with shortsword and dagger and Area Denial Magic or AoE (insect plague, wall of fire…).

I know something just up your alley! Glad to see I'm not the only one looking to play this type of character. But it requires a mod.

Pirate (Homebrew) Class Mod
https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/3070

It's a bit swashbuckler, but also can use pistols. Oh and has a pet parrot, and can summon treasure chests full of rum.

There is a swashbuckler rogue mod as Nexus but I found it too boring. This was the swashbuckler I was looking for (it's also a rogue subclass).

((FYI I know there is not Guns in Baldur's Gate.))

Not without mods. That Pirate mod adds firearms the game; so does the Artificer class; and there's even a separate standalone firearms mod. All of them add early 1600s style weapons like flintlocks, muskets, and pistols to the game.

If you want something that IMHO doesn't fit the setting as well, but anyway, do what you like, there's even folks who have made more modern firearms mods for the game, like enabling the player to use glock pistols or machine guns. I avoid those, just noting they exist.

It does it not cost an action or anything to switching ?

It is not as a pirate, but just being able to wield a range and a melee.

Thank you. I will check it out. I wrote pirate, as to give a clear image what i wanted. It is simple being able to whield a range weapon and a melee.

Any character can perform reasonably well at both melee and ranged combat in this game since thrown weapons are actually legit strong in BG3 compared to 5e RAW.

However, there is no dual wielding both a ranged and melee weapon simultaneously in the game.

Nope. It's a totally free action to switch between your two equipped weapon sets. You can switch to your bow, spend all your actions to shoot enemies with arrows, and then switch back to melee before you end that character's turn. In fact, this is just smart to do, since melee weapons have opportunity attacks while ranged weapons do not. It does, However, cost an action point to equip a new weapon of any type from your inventory.

Yes. The simple answer is to pick a finesse based melee fighting class:

Think about a Fighter --> Battlemaster:

1) DEX + CON build
2) You get to wear Heavy armor so you don't have to be shy about melee
3) Archery fighting style if you want
4) A lot of the maneuvers work for either melee or ranged, work with DEX as your higher bonus, etc.
5) Plenty of HP
6) All kinds of feats to get better at one or both of melee or ranged (and you get 4 of them)
7) Proficiency in all the weapons

An excellent build if you don't want to ubergame min-max. Tough, capable and versatile.

Easy as well:

No fancy Rogue / Bard / bonus action maneuvers required.
No need to eff around with dual wield headaches and limitations.
No need to thread the needle on a complicated multi-class build.

The only clear downside is that you are swinging a melee finesse weapon, so it'll probably be a rapier (though the game does have a couple of nice magical finesse longswords).
