All the characters are largely tied to the classes they start the story as. The class they are is a part of who THEY are.
Gale's whole thing about the goddess of magic and him being a wizard gets a little odd if you swap him into something else. Wyll being tied to a Warlock contract also becomes weird if he's suddenly something else. Elf boy being a rogue makes perfect sense being what he is and his story, same for shadowheart, same for Lae'zel.
For me personally, I wouldn't want a change class system in the game. If it exists, I'd never use it and simply do a multiclassing aspect instead. I'm not saying others can't enjoy it if it exists, but I don't want it and wouldn't be bothered personally if it is never a thing, but again multiclassing will likely be there so you can take them in a different direction after their starting point if you want.
I think it would be nice to leave it open for those who dont have a back story that requires it, like a leazel being a few classes but something like a paladin being locked would make sense, and obviously wyl kinda has to be a warlock, but astarian could also be pretty much anything barring a few calsses. They have mentioned im pretty sure no source that they may be more flexible which may mean just more open to sub classes or perhaps for like shadow heart letting you choose a domain, but that may have also just bin a nod to multiclassing.
I also think it would be a great option to let us choose a backstory and do whatever we want as an option, cuz i might wanna play all the stories but not play the same characters 10 times, letting me turn off knowing full well what ive done and allowing me to play a dwarf warrior (at the very least dwarf warlock) with wylls backstory or whatever wouldnt bother me as an option lol
Not during Early Access, but we are planning to provide that option at launch."
That is a quote from the pinned F.A.Q. Maybe it's a feature that makes the game, maybe not.
We are on a journey together and I want to experience that with who they are and get to know them. If I have agency to alter them, that begins to hurt that for me.
I think it's a nice optional thing they could add, some of us don't care on that level about the story but I do wanna know the story, I just don't care how it's presented to me personally if it's a choice that I made I can't complain. But I won't be upset if they don't add this probably something one could mod in I would bet lol
Though it'll be interesting to see how that sort of mechanical change works with the story. BG3 party members are much more closely associated with their class than DOS2 party members.
Who is Wyll, if not a warlock? Who is Gale, if not a wizard?
I'll do you one better, why is Shadowheart, if not bae?
