Where's the realism, where's the happy songs, WHERE'S THE UNICORNS?!
DOS2 was goofy and cartoony, but I agree it was messed up too.
BG has always been really dark, but it didn't throw you into the deep end right from the start so that's the only difference I am seeing.
It was not cartoony. It was a little goofy but not as bad as DOS1. DOS2 was messed up with all the gallows humor.
As for OP I think he is trolling since he hasn't responded to anyone here.
The world is pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥, because the world is always pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in Forgotten Realms.
But quite a few of your companions are undergoing character arcs. Shadowheart is currently the biggest example of someone softening towards you as time passes. Wyll is already a nice guy with a bit of an edge (which is realistically how someone would behave. Being good doesn't mean being stupid, and good people can make bad decisions), Gale is VERY nice to you and pretty much an open book, but has some rather ♥♥♥♥♥♥ circumstances.
The only ones that are really outright dickish to you 100% of the time are Lae'zel and Astarion. The former of which is part of a race that has dickishness as a racial trait (seriously it's in the race bio for them) and is STILL demonstrably nicer than her kin, even if it just means she openly hates you rather than openly tries to kill you.
As for Astarion? How exactly would you expect a vampire spawn just freed after hundreds of years of servitude to an abusive bully to act?
Basically I wasn't one of the whiners complaining about Diablo 3 from a color aesthetic standpoint. Quite the opposite. I enjoy color and vibrancy, you make everything look almost the same for areas upon areas over and over and that ♥♥♥♥ gets BORING to look at.
Probably doesn't help I tried Diablo 2 late and never got into it game play wise like many others did either.
"Sometimes people dont get along - but then those people choose to team up for a long adventure with possible romances."
Unrealistic things that never happened for 1000 please LOL
People who actually like the companions we have currently probably have some sort of Stokholm syndrome going with their RL friends - cus that ♥♥♥♥ aint how relationships are supposed to be.
I think what many refer to as cartoonish graphics is just over saturation and gloom.
It was used quite a lot in DoS2 and Diablo 3 though. Maybe a bit too much - but thats personal taste.

*Other people you meet here in the Lawless Wilderness, life lives of Recluses/Outcasts, that do not take kindly to strangers*
*Said Wilderness if full of stuff that can and will kill you, then either eat or rape you in no particular order*
