Mindless edgy grimdark crap?
UPDATE:
Including the main source of my skepticism about BG3 being 'too edgy'. My concerns are not random paranoia or trolling from out of nowhere, they derive from an review of the game:
I played 15 hours of Baldur’s Gate 3 early access, and I want them back[arstechnica.com]

Also this extra stuff the reviewer talks about in
a post in their comment section[arstechnica.com]
You'll have to reveal spoilers for the most relevant parts.

Original Post:
So, I'm a fan of the classic Baldur's Gate games. I'm also a fan of a lot of grimdark games and media. I have ♥♥♥♥ like Darkwood and Fear & Hunger in my library.

However, it sounds like BG3 so far is mindlessly cruel and sadistic for the sake of it, with little narrative justification.

Not only are you stuck with starting companions who all hate your guts and treat you like ♥♥♥♥, but apparently so are most of the other NPCs you encounter.

Except the ones who aren't so bad, you often have to do a dice roll to determine if they get to be tortured or murdered, whether at hands of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ npcs or even your own.

Does this game have any justification for being so edgy, or is this more of the same 'dark and mean for the sake of it' crap that too many game writers think is 'cool' nowadays?

Do not bother responding if your explanation is that it's 'cool' or 'original' to make a licensed rpg classic into a 'misery simulator'.

Well you see people complained about their previous games not being dark enough and too goofy even though their previous game was pretty messed up. Actually I think a lot of people complained that this game isn't dark enough either, so blame those people.

can you give examples of the edgy dark stuff in this game? I didn't notice anything edgy or dark honestly. The companions are relatively nice, with the exception of lae'zel. They use to be a lot less approachable when EA first got released.

I don't think the companions treat you like **** at all. I think its just the circumstances of being abducted, then having a parasite inserted behind your eye which gives you an unwelcome connection with total strangers.

I think that would make even some of the most stoic, and pragmatic people I've ever met uneasy. Their behavior seems completely justified IMO.

I'm not seeing how all of the companions outwardly hate you and treat you poorly. Only Lae'zel really fits that description for fairly obvious reasons.

Where did you hear about this?

When the game first came out there were whole threads devoted to talking about how the game wasn't dark enough to be a BG game and fit the theme of the series. Some say too dark and too edgy, some say too light, I just say it is fun to play.

Hey OP do not buy it and go away
Well, seeing as how your take on the game is incorrect, I can't really answer the question at the end of the post.

BG3 is many things - dark and twisted, light and humorous, sexy, and exhilarating. It really depends on which part of the content you engage with.

Companions seem fine to me, as a matter of fact I didn't have a problem with them before they patched their personalities. Sometimes people don't get along, that's life.

The game is only going to get darker for sure. Did you see all the stuff in Grymforge? Best buckle up now!

So they are mainly doing evil route stuff atm. It is simply to encourage us to go down the evil path so they can adjust it to not be awful. They plan on adding a lot of nicer things later, including good aligned companions. At the moment all of our companions are either evil, or neutral. Wyll and Gale do try to act good at least, even if they had made evil decisions in the past.

I guess I missed the part where BG went "mindless, edgy and grimdark"? That's the first time I ever heard someone had that train of thought. Curious to say the least.

I'm also chuckling quite a bit.

That was rather tame, as I recall. If they are going to ramp up the "edgy" stuff, they still have ways to go.

The pile of dead gnomes and the disregard of them by the duergar chucking them like trash into the pit was tame?

By reading forums of different games for years, I have come to a conclusion that devs should ignore every opinionated forum post. They should just focus on making game that they themselves would enjoy to play.

This is correct. I've also gotten the vibe from interviews that this is the approach Larian is taking to BG3 as well.

Yes it is... If one of the duergar would have picked up one of the dead gnomes and made fun of him/her while moving the body parts in the air as if he/she was alive, and then throw them in the water, that would be edgy & add life to it.

What they're actually doing is uneventful chores & the scene is too focused on the player's reaction rather than what the Duergar are doing. It IS NOT a scene that adds atmosphere to Grymforge, rather a scene that the player can react to & forget about it shortly after... This is not the only scene which is structured that way.
