I don't believe that time exists in this game.
Like Keith said, if you start an event, resting during it may cause the event to fail, but as far as I know there is no rest "X" amount of times and miss out on content.
In fact, it is encourage that you rest more then you need to since many dialog cutscenes only happen at camp and they will queue up if you ignore resting.
All about balance. If you could run through the game casting your big spells as much as you want you would breeze through everything. And would solely rely on your spells instead of trying to think about other possible solutions.
