Are Monks viable?
Pure monk. Also, they should be ok at Slight of Hand checks, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick response.

Yeah. Monk is one of those classes that feels crappy early game. You'll be spending a lot of, if not all your resources for one fight.

But it gets a lot better as you progress. There a lot of loot drops specifically tailored to monks out there too.

This class should have at least some philosophy behind it, like druids or paladins

Open hand STR based monk is one of the most fun classes IMHO in the game. Hits like a truck and still good with all the monk stuff except slight of hand since you're sacrificing dex.

I know you said pure monk... but I do multiclass my STR monk for 5 levels. 2 into fighter and 3 into rogue. Action surge and thief "for the extra bonus actions" add a ton of damage to the build. But you don't HAVE to do it for it to be viable and fun.

Yeah sure.
Just a friendly warning.
Wizard, druids and cleric are tier 1 classes.
Nothing is as good as them.
Dont compaire yourself to them.
Monk is entirely viable.
Just not the best.

I love Monk. It def gets better as you level up

Open hand and especially way of the elements monks are super fun to play. I think every class is viable on highest difficulty, but monk is one of the stronger classes.

My friend did Open Hand and it was great, 4 elements though is kinda bad which sucks because it has totally unique animations, not unusable though.

it's a lot better than it is in strict 5e and this campaign has lots of monk gear to alleviate their shortcomings.

Tbh barb and monk are ok at the start and mid game, but at the end they lack AC to be a frontline melee. Heavy and medium armors are the game here and those two can't wear any of those.

I know you said pure monk, but I found a multiclass monk (mostly still monk, though) what seems way more fun than a pure monk: Monk/Barbarian.

You should find a video guide of it called "Raging Monk" or something, and it seemed pretty strong and fun. Though it won't be good at Sleight of Hand because it's a strength build instead of dexterity.

I dunno, the monk in my party insists that he doesn't need gear and likes to throw rare items into the abyss when he thinks we're not looking.

I just hit Level 5 with my monk. That's when it gets to be a lot of fun.
