How much AC is enough AC for this game?
Im not a min maxer, I tend to go the roleplayer's route, whatever fits the narrative, but wanted to pick the minds of the minmax players.

In BG3, what is the optimal AC required in this game, ya think?

Most everyone can get to 18. Shield users can get to 20 easily. A few high end magic items can push you to 22 or even 24. Enemies are still going to find ways to hit you though. You need consistent ways of imposing disadvantage or preventing them from attacking entirely.

A majority of my characters is over 21 now, and it helps a lot.
It obviously doesn't make you invulnerable though. There isn't (and shouldn't be) an armor that makes you unhitable.

You can never have enough AC in this game. As Glyph stated, stacking Attack roll bonuses is easier than stacking AC bonuses. This is an intentional 'nerf' to AC in DnD 5e and BG3 to prevent players from cheesing the game with an unhittable AC.

Damage mitigation is more important than AC imho. Damage Resistance, Temporary Hit Points, and Increased Max Hit Points will go a long way to bolstering any character, regardless of their AC.

High AC is good. But creating disadvantages situations is better. Damage mitigation also better.

Currently my highest AC is my “squishy” Rogue with 21 AC no shield, it’s absolutely helps. But i satisfied with Laezel who can absorb a lot of standard damage because of her Adamant forge armor.

Probably a good thing. Remember Neverwinter Nights? A build wasn't a build unless your character had 40+ AC.

Sounds like you haven't found the cloak of displacement

Or they displaced it.

It's never enough.

Be barbarian, use reckless swing, ignore irrelevant AC stat in favor of resistance to damn near everything and massive health pool. Walk through entire hordes and BTFO them like the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they are.

It honestly depends on your build & party, you might make a character so elusive it rarely ever gets hit but once hit will fall over like a leaf. Contrary to that you might also make a party build upon buffs or debuffs.

you can have a tank at 14 AC and that would be perfect based on what race, class or build it is but u might also have 24 yet frail to a certain type or very limited and not versatile.

Honestly I've been playing the game on tactician and the enemy's difficulty hit bonus makes them hit me most of the time anyway so I've just been focused on either killing or CCing them before they get a turn. Seems like the best way to play, or just be out of reach where they can't attack you.
alex_diste 18 Thg09, 2023 @ 4:20am
with a monk/barbarian class:

Natural:10
CON: 23 (+6) Amulet of Greater Health
DEX: 18 (+4) Gloves of Dexterity
WIS: 20 (+5). Start with 17 WIS and use ASI

So 10+6+4+5=25 without armor or shield and you can also have rage.

and if you use also mod/cheats and you have all stats to 30 (+10) then 40 is max AC.

I forgot also +2 AC from ring of protection and cloack of protection and there is also bracer to give +2 AC, you will not have dex 18 but maybe you can max dex with asi and a boot of +1 AC

monk and barbarian unarmoured defence doesn't stack.

The optimal is as high as you can get it, but with something like 18 in act 1, 20 in act 2 and 22 in act 3 you will be fine. It's always good to have a couple with higher than that though.
