Critical hit on a roll of 1. Excuse me, WHAT

Screen above. Other enemies in the encounter do critical after critical too, rolling 15, 16..
Don't I have to roll nat 20 for this in 5th edition? What in the 9 hells is happening here?

Karmic dice is turned off, and I ran 100% vanilla game.

Edit: It was due to being paralyzed, a condition ghouls can inflict.

Looks like either a bug or something to do with the karmic dice system.

Definitely not a 5e thing.

There do seem to be some strange issues with some enemies or actions. Like in Act 2 there are some medium size enemies that cannot be shoved at all. They have no trait or effect preventing it, but the game will report it as failing a DC of 0 against whatever you roll.

Add it to the pile I guess, lol.

No, other numbers can be crits, not only 20. A fighter can crit on 19-20 and some items increase the range by 1. Luck of the far realms turns everything into a crit (for a fight), and there is a feat that males a 1 not an auto-fail I believe.
A crit on a 1 is kinda ridiculous and in probabilty a bug or caused by a mod.

You cannot shove the incorporeal, if you mean them.

Have to be a bug. 1 is meant to be an instant fail no matter what.

its just this games garbage combat. major mistake changing it from DOS2.

pure trash

It's not a bug. If you read the description of the paralysed status, it says that attacks on the affected entity have 100% (yes, 100% even on nat 1) chance to hit and are always crits. Weird or not, that's just how it works.

I notice you were fighting a ghoul, were they paralyzed at the time?

You can even see the paralyzed Icon on Shadowheart in their screenshot

That's normal mechanic.

Might be. I already got trough this encounter, in like, 10 tries. Then I stepped on a repulsor mine, and decided to explore nearest chasm. Wanna know what's on the bottom? Quickload. And yea, forgot to save after the ghouls, fml
