D&D.
AD&D was a bit later.
As to OP, Obsidian hasn't been Obsidian in years. Most of the team that made them good left before PoE2. Even before the Microsoft buyout I wouldn't want them near a venerable franchise like "baldurwind nights".
They did. It was called 5e and it fixed the bloat issues.
It's easy to say they should've done it, but it is near impossible to say that they would be anywhere near as successful. Balance of probability would suggest however that they could not.
Anyway there's no way they end up on a D&D game instead of a Pilllars setting one with Microsoft ownership I'd guess.
I actually liked the Pathfinder games but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who hasn't already exhausted all other CRPGs availible.
When did Obsidian or Owlcat's CRPGs ever have a CCU as high as BG3 does? Owlcat's biggest one, Wrath of the Righteous, had slightly more than 5% of BG3's CCU. Pillars of Eternity had slightly less than 5%.
So... you were saying?
Swen stated on record that WotC approached them for BG3 because of D:OS2 serving as a proof-of-concept. They were initially turned down after D:OS1 because they were still too unproven at that point.
