While some people do like actually fighting in combat this is the third larion game where you can just keep one person out of combat in stealth throwing explosives to kill everything whilst you party members sit afk.
And if you dont even want to enter combat just cast minor illusion to gather all the enemys ontop of explosives.
What can help make your arcane trickster a bit better:
1) Avoid single target damage spells as sneak attack should be your primary single target damage.
2) Pick AoE, buffs/debuffs, protective magic, and utility spells. Shield is nice for avoiding the odd hit. Friends as a cantrip is super helpful.
3) Arcane trickster makes for good multiclassing into wizard.
4) Remember that your rogue is a rogue first and that the magic is there to supplement the rogue's package.
Again its probably the strongest class due to infinite amount of uses of minor illusion the only spell you need in the game. Just dont use it to try to bash heads in. Use it to sneak around outside of combat setting up 1 shot kills for every encounter.
To be honest that sounds more like creative use of spells and has nothing to do with the rogue. You can get minor illusion in other ways. So the point still stands, as a -rogue-, is it weaker or not doing rogue things.
but rogue gets infinite casts of it :D
