Why was I given a [Detect Thoughts] option when speaking to Kagha?

I don't have anybody in the party who can even cast the spell. I'm a Beast Master Ranger, and I had Lae'zel, Shadowheart and Gale with me at the time. And even if I could cast it, I certainly didn't do so before talking to her. After the conversation was over, I apparently still have Detect Thoughts active on my character.

This is the first time I've seen this option appear, and I have no idea why it did.

Probably some item. I also remember having this in act 1 like you describe, but later I had to drink the potion to access it.

Not by any of their equipment. Shadowheart has a Scroll of Detect Thoughts, but she still has it so she couldn't have used it.

This would make sense if Kagha also has a tadpole, but as far as I know, she doesn't. Unless she's secretly a "True Soul". And I haven't unlocked any Illithid abilities yet.

Because you have a Detect Thoughts scroll in your inventory. Using this option will consume the scroll.

Either you have a scroll or potion with the effect. If you choose that option you will consume whatever it is that gives it to you.

Then I must have had two of them somehow, because I did choose the option, but I also still have the scroll.

I also had this effect for awhile. I don't know how I got it, but I did get it. Everyone (almost) I talked to had a detect thoughts option followed by a low bar dice roll.

Could be a potion, a scroll or some of the items what guarantee the spell. If I remember right, the first one in the game is a necklace from the wizard tower in the underdark, but I might not remember because by now it's been a lot of time since I was in act 1.

Somehow I had it when I arrived in the druid's grove. Maybe when I killed the half dead illithid? Or talked to the weird ox? I did have an 'amulet of talk to the dead' but they aren't dead. It was most everyone in the grove, even the mean lady with the snake and the devil who wanted to shoot the goblin over her lost relation.

There's a potion or scroll of mind reading very early in the game, before the grove. I think there's actually 2 of them. I had 2 when I got to the grove on both of my playthroughs.

In my current (2nd) playthrough, I'm just finishing the Wilderness area, doing the Creche area last, and I believe i have like 4 or 5 scrolls of detect thoughts and 3 or 4 potions of mind reading. I almost never use them.

I think this is from 'speaking to wyll' first time. It might be a glitch, but it's got to be some time around when you arrive at the grove. I've restarted the game a few times doing tweaks and I always get it about the time I talk to the guy AFTER I talk to Wyll, who is training the kids with shortswords.

Shadowheart comes with a detect thoughts scroll, or you picked one up on your journey.
