When would a player be "Obscured"?

I just found an onyx ring that gives +1 AC when obscured, but when would I be obscured? If it's stealth, why would I want more AC when already hidden? Thanks for any info.

Generally speaking, it's when your character's feet are touching a shadow from the environment. When the sun icon is half full or empty. You can still be obscured even if you're not sneaking.

Cool thanks! Did some searching but came up empty, as others asked the same question without a response.

Spells like Fog Cloud and Darkness, that block vision, cause everyone in the area of effect to be obscured.
