Throwing items vs weapons
I know that throwing a weapon does its weapon damage value, and throwing heavier things does more damage, but is there a weight at which throwing something heavy is generally better than throwing a weapon? or is throwing weapons always better?

You only actually do weapon damage value for thrown weapons (or berserker throw I think?)

The cutoff would vary based on height, because thrown attacks do falling damage based on weight and height, which can actually be pretty huge.

Haven't tried it but I bet the old DOS trick of throwing a heavy backpack would just instagib people if you do it from a cliff

The best way to throw objects is to make sure you have the high ground. Thrown objects (and weapons) get bonus damage for the difference in height. Stack a bunch of crates then throw something down on an enemy and it will take a bunch of extra damage. Get high enough and you can one shot anything.

ah, so basically if I'm standing on an even level with something i'm better off chucking a javelin at them, but if i'm standing on a ledge above them hucking a water barrel off of it onto their head will hurt more?

Yeah basically. Berserker Barbarians get bonuses for throwing stuff using their Frenzied Throw ability. Also if you want to make throwing objects part of your characters thing, make sure to pick up the Tavern Brawler feat which improves throwing stuff.

ok cool. yeah mostly the question just came from having picked up a heavy ass lockbox and carting it around thinking i'll splat someone with it eventually. but it uses so much carry capacity i wasn't sure if i should ditch it and just throw javelins instead.

Oh yeah the weight of an item as far as I know has no effect on the damage. A pebble will do the same thrown damage as a barrel. But to be honest I haven't done much thrown weapon combat personally except on my barbarian where I throw axes to keep my rage up if I can't get to melee range in a turn, I just know what I've seen on YouTube, and I saw a video where someone stacked like 50 crates and got a few hundred feet in the air and threw a stone at an enemy and it took a couple hundred damage.

The tooltip for throw says "heavier items deal more damage", but maybe it's bugged?

I have done a bit of throwing on my Oathbreaker Paladin, I have noticed that ive hit people pretty hard with random items. I did something like 8 damage at level 4 by throwing a goblin at a bugbear. Then I have throw random items like a skull and hit someone for 13 at level 5. I think it might be controlled by your Carry Weight, Strength, their AC, item weight, crit chance and probably even the same modifiers on the target..I am sure there is probably more in there but I don't think they are just using a random number between 1-15 on a throw considering how much attention they have paid to other interactions inside of combat.

Also I there are SO many better things you can throw at people than lockboxes, get a little creative throw a grease bottle at someone then throw a candle at their feet. If you see a smoke powder barrel pick it up...hold onto it for a while. When you get to a big group yeet that in the middle and light them all up.
