Actually you get 6 spell slots, they recharge on short rest and are always cast at your highest spell level.
Once he gets the ability I forgot the name of, he can use his EB as touch attack, which means free use in melee range. It is a toggle, however, and needs to be turned off if you are in melee and want to shoot someone else.
Over time he can get access to spells he can cast once per long rest, but don't use his spell slots. His spell slots work for any known spell, 1st-5th, making him flrxible, and he can renew them every short rest. I also got summon ghouls (6 of them) and mummies during the game, which is not bad to have.
Pact of the blade grants you the use of a summoned or bound weapons with CHA for attack and damage. However, you must renew the summons after each long rest or the bonus is gone.
Edit: I am not so big on hex as some are, especially after finding out how many foes don't take necrotic damage.
Just give him the halbard (reach weapon) from the golem in the arcane tower (1d10+1+1d6 electr.), spec him into pact of the blade at lv 3(!!), give him repelling and agonising blast at lv 2 and devil's sight at lv 5, and voila, you have got yourself a very usefull tactician that can help play lots of roles in your party. You have got yourself...
- eldrich blast with 2x push back for battlefield control
- a decently good melee fighter with 2 attacks. Either get his CHA to 20 (the best option in my point of view) at lv 8, alternatively give him sentinel for even more control or pole arm master for more melee damage and an extra attack at lv 8 after getting CHA to 18 at lv 4.
- a decent (though limited) caster with counterspell, fireball/hunger of hadar and/or hypnotic pattern next to hex and armor of agathys maybe
- a good talker
- After one level of fighter at lv 6 (medium armor + defensive fighting style) he rocks the house!
- For the other levels go warlock again.
- At warlock lv 11 he gets a 3rd spell slot, so this improves as well, though late.
Last not least (but maybe that's only me), his personality doesn't get on my nerves; he is just a nice guy. In my party setup with Lae'Zel, Shadowheart and my main (Gloomstalker) he contributes very well to the party success.
This. An excellent and super versatile character. Plus he is a nice guy. Have him with me almost all the time.
He CAN use shields, but his AC isn't going to be high at low level. But here's what you do:
L2: Take Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast. This will make his Eldritch Blast much stronger
L3: Pact of the Blade. This will give him a viable melee option. Just remember to bind your pact weapon.
L4: Ability Buff: +1 CHA, +1 DEX. This should get his CHA to 18 and DEX to 14 with his starting stats, so gives his offense a boost and +1 AC.
L5: Gets the extra attack with pact weapon and +1 beam per eldritch blast. Big buffs here.
L6: Now here's where I diverge with the build option. I elected to take a fighter level and the defense combat style. This allows him to use medium armor, which with his 14 DEX, gives him a solid AC. With the pact weapon and eldritch blast, he should have good offense as well.
Other tips: Take the hex spell, it's a bonus action that gives +1d6 damage per hit.
Anyways, that's how you make Wyll useful. Past L6 just keep levelling up his warlock levels.
2. Take the +CHA to damage on Eldrich Blast
If you do not do these things, a Warlock is going to seem weak.
