The plot is better but it's not great.
The game is succeeding on gameplay and production values. Not writing quality.
It's better than D2 for certain. I'd probably put it on par in many ways with WotR. Many will disagree with me there. But they tend to be people who hate Pathfinder etc.
It's certainly more cinematic which makes up for the brevity and simplistic nature in the writing.
Characterisation is solid. Story beats are interesting and side quests feel organic and natural without feeling "gamey" and this is largely down to the writing make them seem realistic to the setting.
WotR: way better writing than BG 3
PoE 2: you can fit the main plot on half a piece of paper and it is awful; great sidequests and nice landscape, though
BG1 and 2 still easily ♥♥♥♥ all over this game in every possible concivable way as far as writing goes.
And of course if you never played the older games like BG 1 , 2 and the neverwinter night games it's also worth checking those out.. think there is a humble bundle for them all at the moment.
Edit: the larvae thing in BG 3 reminds me strongly of the spirit eater mechanics in that DLC.
I'd put BG3 roughly in the middle of the pack of the titles that you've listed.
BG3's writing is good at the buildup and bad at the payoff.
Wish that Obsidian still existed
Would really like a Pillars 3.
