Anyone else lost hours of progress due to the cloud sync bug?
Just lost 5 hours myself. That's 20% of a day's worth of gameplay gone. I will have to do the same fights, talk to the same characters, and explore the same areas - 5 entire hours worth of them - again. I tried to find where the game stores local saves, but it turns out that BG3 seemingly does not write local saves at all. Such an over-reliance on Steam cloud is so insulting now that it's failed me catastrophically that I am even considering a refund. Anyone else experience this?

Nope. I turned cloud off because scumming a hundred quicks for pickpocketing made it take forever for the game to exit.

I think it takes so long because the game doesn't write local saves if you have cloud sync on, so it must wait for the upload to finish or else you'll actually lose progress. Which, if true, is a really stupid system imo.

You're just mistaken.

Saves are in Steam\userdata\70527790\1086940\remote\_SAVE_Public\Savegames\Story

I haven't looked at it, but the concept of "cloud sync" means saves are always written locally and then forcibly "synced" to a remote location. Steam's "cloud" performance has always been crap, so if you generate a hundred diffs from a "real" save that have to be sent up, it's still going to take a lot longer. That was my logic in turning it off, anyway; I trust my own storage and I trust that we won't eat a gigantic coronal mass ejection while I'm doing my first run of a game.

Direct cloud writes would be awful to build into a game that's already being generated for multiple platforms. Nobody wants to wade in those weeds.

Yes, they're there, but they're overwritten by bad cloud saves. I found this out the hard way when I was trying to restore my progress, looking for my local files.

I turned it off, my internet is too slow to keep up with syncing.

There's extra copy of save files at %\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public\Savegames\Story\ as well. Perhaps check there if sometihng can be salvaged.

Well, turns out your local saves are also overwritten by the Steam cloud's outdated version if you're unlucky enough to fall into the same bug I experienced. I'm turning off Cloud sync as well and doing so for future games I purchase. Useless bloody feature.

Disabled it the moment I had, cloud is ♥♥♥♥, I can deal with my savegame management.

Well that's no good; yeah I'd suggest turning it off and making your own data hygiene procedures for backing up saves. Once upon a time, if Steam's "cloud" and your local saves were out of sync, they'd give you an ambiguous A/B question:

"Do you want to not keep your not locals up to date with the not cloud? No/No"

Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam taught me that lesson forever.

I did the same thing. For most games I turn cloud save off. Day 1, turned that baby off.

I have had steam cloud save issues in other games.
i'd put this as a steam, network and sync issue.
usually its safer to disable and not use steam cloud saves since whenever their servers or net have hiccups, something can mess up with the "cloud vs local is the right saves?!" discrepancies.
